ALGA sets sights on the future at 2019 NGA

ALGA is keeping its sights set firmly on the future as it reveals the theme for the 2019 National General Assembly of Local Government: Future Focused. Australian Futurist, author, technologist and speaker Steve Sammartino has already been confirmed as a keynote speaker. Steve wrote his first lines of computer code at age 10 and is one of Australia s most respected futurists.

ALGA federal election advocacy focus: Promote healthier communities

It is estimated that around 10% of Gross Domestic Product is spent on health care. With the cost of health care only increasing, greater priority needs to be given to preventative health to keep people well and to reduce the burden on the hospital and primary care system.

Registrations are now open for AccessAbility Day 2018, an Australian Government initiative bringing employers and people with disability together for a day. Sarah Henderson, Assistant Minister for Social Services, Housing and Disability Services, has encouraged employers to host a person with disability for a day between Monday 26 and Friday 30 November 2018.

Retirees encouraged to 'get amongst it' to stay active

An aging population brings with it increased responsibilities for local governments wanting to enhance the health and wellbeing of their community. One way to do this is to encourage retirees to leave the comfort of their homes and take on activities that will keep them fit, stimulate their minds and expand their social contacts.

A bridge that tells you when it needs repairs?

It's just a small bridge in Germany. Yet without it, airplanes flying into Dusseldorf Airport could not refuel. The bridge is the only access route to the airport's fuel tank farm. Every day, over 120 tank trucks, each carrying over 30,000 litres of kerosene use it-a huge load that will eventually lead to material fatigue. If the bridge was damaged, could you imagine the consequences?
