President's column

With two local government elections underway and others on the horizon, I thought it would be an ideal time to raise the issues of cyberbullying, trolling and other challenges social media can generate.

Before social media, community feedback was provided face-to-face in the street or by letters written by hand or typed by an individual or on behalf of a group. Candidate campaigns were conducted by flyers, door knocks and through community meetings.

Ensuring greater safety through Australia's transport supply chain is the focus of changes to Chain of Responsibility laws which took effect from 1 October.

Consultation to amend the laws started in 2015 with the National Transport Commission engaging in talks to gather feedback from regulatory agencies and industry groups throughout Australia.

The Australian Government also invested more than $800,000 through the Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiatives project over two years

ALGA federal election advocacy focus: Boost safety on local roads

Inadequately-maintained roads and bridges can have serious road safety outcomes. The 2015 State of the Assets report, commissioned by ALGA, estimates that around 11% of local government transport assets, with a replacement value of around $20 billion, are in poor or very poor condition and in need of urgent maintenance and/or renewal.

Maintaining the local road system is one of local government's major tasks. In most councils, it is the single largest item of expenditure.
