President's column

Having a place to call home is a fundamental human right, but unfortunately too many people in our communities find themselves without a roof over their head - often for reasons beyond their control.

It's Homelessness Week and we're reminded that homelessness is one of the most potent examples of disadvantage in the community, and one of the most important markers of social exclusion.

First-of-its-kind report shines a spotlight on Australia's 'rough sleepers'

On Census night in 2016, around 8,200 Australians were 'sleeping rough' - living on the streets, sleeping in parks, squatting, staying in cars or living in improvised dwellings. For the first time, a new report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) provides insights into this complex and vulnerable group in our society.

Applications for Round 4 of the Stronger Communities Programme are now open

Communities across Australia are set to share in $22.5 million to improve local infrastructure and provide essential community equipment with applications now open for Round 4 of the Stronger Communities Programme.

Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh said the program is aimed at funding projects that deliver social benefits.
