Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council wins 2018 National Award for Excellence in Local Government

The Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council has taken out the 2018 National Award for Excellence in Local Government with their innovative approach to ensuring lifesaving communications remain accessible during natural disaster events.

Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh made the announcement during the NGA dinner on Tuesday night commending the extremely high standard of entries that demonstrate what local governments can achieve for their communities.

70 coats donated for homeless at NGA

Mayors, councillors and local government representatives have donated 70 coats for the homeless and those in need as part of a coat drive ahead of National Coat Day, which is run by Enormity.

The coats were collected at the 2018 National General Assembly of Local Government, which was held this week at the National Convention Centre in Canberra.

Senator Steve Martin, who helped launch the drive at the conference, said homelessness does not discriminate.

New 'Grace Benny Award' to celebrate women in local government

Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh has announced a new national award to encourage more women in local government.

"The 'Grace Benny Award' will be added to the national local government awards from next year to coincide with the centenary of the first woman elected to any level of government in Australia - Grace Benny who was elected to the Brighton Council in South Australia in 1919," Dr McVeigh said.
