A Senate Select Committee has recommended that the Commonwealth government elect a department or body to oversee migrant and humanitarian settlement services. The recommendation was one of 13 made by the committee, which was inquiring into ways to protect and strengthen multiculturalism and social inclusion.

A retired Queensland Supreme Court judge, Peter Lyons QC, has been appointed to lead an independent investigation into the large-scale transportation of waste into Queensland.

Local Government's Community Infrastructure Ideas Register

The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) is developing a register of potential community infrastructure projects around Australia. ALGA will draw on this register in building the evidence base to strengthen the case for a Commonwealth funding program to help councils undertake vital projects to meet community needs.

Pavement performance study published

A seven-year study aimed at improving our understanding of pavement surface failures caused by heavy freight vehicles has been published. The Austroads project focused on the relationship between the horziontal stresses generated by heavy vehicles when turning, accelerating or braking and their impact on the performance of the pavement surface, particularly on sprayed seal surfacings.

Long and winding roads

The latest audit of the state and territory road systems shows continued strong growth in paved roads, freeways and tunnels, both in terms of length and asset value.
