President's column

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced his Ministry this week and, although it remained mostly unchanged, there was an important development for the local government portfolio which was elevated to the Cabinet and now sits with Senator the Hon Fiona Nash. The Senator was appointed the Minister for Local Government and Territories in addition to her role as the Minister for Regional Development.

The local government portfolio structure will remain the same with the Hon Darren Chester continuing as Minister for Infrastructure and Transport

Local government portfolio elevated to Cabinet Ministry

ALGA has welcomed the recent elevation of the local government portfolio to the Cabinet Ministry, with Senator the Hon Fiona Nash appointed the Minister for Local Government and Territories in addition to her role as the Minister for Regional Development. ALGA President, Mayor Troy Pickard, said the elevation was a positive step for local government and community priorities.

"This appointment illustrates the importance of preserving and strengthening the partnership between federal and local government to ensure the sustainability of local communities."

Roads to Recovery List variations following amalgamations

Variations have been made to the Roads to Recovery List to enable payments to be claimed by newly-amalgamated councils.

On 12 May 2016 the New South Wales Government created 19 new councils as part of its Stronger Councils / Stronger Communities initiative resulting in the abolition and merger of 41 councils including the Parramatta City Council being renamed as the City of Parramatta Council.

The PNG-Australia Transport Sector Support Program (TSSP), managed by SMEC, is an Australian aid project funded by the Australian Government. The long-term development goal is a safer, more reliable transport system which enables economic and social development in PNG. TSSP is looking for qualified professionals for the following roles:

SENIOR ROAD ENGINEER ADVISER

This position works with Department of Works (DoW) to strengthening organisational capacity in overseeing the implementation of road maintenance/rehabilitation works. The position will coordinate TSSP road projects, design and plan maintenance contracts; and provide high quality reporting.

ROAD NETWORK PLANNING ADVISER

This role will work to enhance land transport planning capacity in the areas of funding, modelling and asset management.  The role will assist with the development of strategy, policy and reporting to assist the DoW implement its obligations in regard to road assets.

Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) Workshop

Want to gain real hands on experience solving LATM related concerns? This two-day intensive training course will bring students up to speed with current best practice applying LATM principles.

The information presented will be based on the background material supporting the latest 2016 edition of the Austroads Guide to Traffic Management Part 8: Local Area Traffic Management. It will cover material relating to best practice techniques, available resources, design principles, device selection, special needs of different road users and a case study syndicate exercise to provide hands on experience applying the latest practice.

All participants will be provided with a copy of workshop and speakers’ notes. This documentation will be a useful technical resource for all traffic engineering and planning practitioners that have exposure to LATM.
